Guangzhou preschool puts poison in Jiemao machine
On August 29, 2025, an incident involving the suspected poisoning of stray cats in a public residential area was exposed on Chinese social media. Staff at the Qicai Diandian Daycare & Early Education Center (七彩点点托育·早教中心) in the Jinsahn Valley Garden of Panyu District, Guangzhou, were accused of deliberately placing poison in and around a "Street Cat" automatic feeder, leading to the deaths of multiple cats. The incident has triggered significant public outrage over animal cruelty and public safety, especially given the involvement of an early education institution.

The incident
On August 29, 2025, Chinese social media user "烏鴉" posted on Xiaohongshu, accusing the Qicai Diandian daycare center of intentionally poisoning cats.[1] The evidence presented included:
- Images from the feeder's camera showing a cat consuming the allegedly poisoned food.
- A close-up photo of the feeder's dispenser, clearly showing foreign substances mixed with the cat food.
- A photo of human food scraps that were also allegedly mixed with poison and left out for the cats.
- Food laced with poison was discovered at the feeder and in its vicinity.
Chat logs from a WeChat group on the same day corroborated the consequences. User "徐小旺" confirmed that at least one cat had died after eating the food ("猫都吃死了").[2] The chat logs also confirmed that the cats' caretakers had reported the incident to the police and that the poisoners had placed food scraps mixed with rat poison next to the feeder in addition to contaminating the machine itself.[2] The poison is suspected to be Tetramine (毒鼠强) or other types of rodenticide.
Stated motives
A screenshot of a conversation from the review site 大众点评, shared in the original Xiaohongshu post, reveals the daycare center's stated grievances with the local cat colony.[1] In response to a negative comment, the business's account listed several complaints as its justification:
- Safety concerns: Unvaccinated "wild cats" were being fed near their fire escape, posing a scratch risk to children.
- Hygiene issues: The cats were defecating and urinating around the storefront.
- Fire safety hazard: A cat shelter had been built by the fire escape exit, obstructing it.
The business account concluded that the matter should be "handled by the police station."[1]
Community response and legal action
The incident quickly drew widespread condemnation on social media, with a post by Weibo user "鸭圣婆" bringing it to a larger audience.[3] One representative comment stated: "If you don't like them, you can move the street cats, not choose to poison them in a public place... For an institution that is in long-term contact with young children who are shaping their healthy psychology, this is very frightening."[3]
Community members organized online, circulating a call to action with specific legal demands. They accused the daycare of the "crime of releasing dangerous substances" which endangers public safety, and of violating China's Animal Epidemic Prevention Law. Their key demands included an immediate end to the poisoning and a police investigation into the daycare's legal compliance and its staff's qualifications.
The community encouraged the public to file official complaints through the Guangzhou government hotline (020-12345), the police (020-110), and the Guangdong government service app. As of this report, the case has been reported to the police, but the status of the official investigation is unknown.
