Jiemao

Jiemao (街猫, literally “street cats”) is a company that installs cat feeding machines in various public spaces. These machines aim to provide consistent food and water for stray and free-range cats while reducing the scattering of food scraps on the ground, creating a more sustainable and hygienic way to support community cats. The Jiemao machines are equipped with cameras and remote feeding function, allowing caretakers to monitor the situation from afar.

The pregnant cat

The victim was a pregnant Li Hua cat that often rested at the Jiemao machine where Wang killed her. Her name was 四美女 (The Fourth Beauty). The Jiemao machine was nicknamed "美女聚集地" (Beautiful Women Gathering Place). Her caretaker, who filed the police report, noted that her nickname on both Jiemao and Weixin was 🌈JOJO🦋, as shown in the screenshots provided on this page.

The incident

On the afternoon of August 16, 2025, at approximately 2:40 PM, Wang followed a pregnant calico cat into a public corridor of a residential building.[1] As the cat attempted to flee, he grabbed it by the tail.[1] Surveillance footage captured Wang repeatedly and violently slamming the cat against the wall and a Jiemao machine.[1][2] Even after the cat was motionless, he continued the assault by jumping on and stomping its body multiple times to ensure the death of the mother cat and her unborn kittens.[1][2] The scene, including the walls, the Jiemao machine, and Wang's shoes, was left covered in blood.[1] Afterward, he disposed of the cat's body in a corner of the complex.[1]

According to the complainant, the perpetrator returned to the scene later that night, on the same day as the incident, looking for more cats to harm.

Other documented incidents

In addition to this incident, Wang was reportedly seen near the Central Hospital of Wuhan throwing rocks at cats. During the incident, he nearly hit a passerby and got into an argument, allegedly stating that "cats and women should all die."

Chat messages circulating online describing Wang's altercation with a passerby near the Central Hospital of Wuhan.

Chat logs from the Weixin group led by the complainant offer more details of the incident.

The complainant obtained a police case receipt and issued a warning about the perpetrator's last known whereabouts.

One group chat member stated that the perpetrator is very misogynistic, sharing the following hearsay:

“The pervert was caught, do you know that this man hates women? While at Central Hospital, he said cats deserved to die and repeatedly claimed that women are useless. On the night of August 16, between 10:00 and 10:20 p.m., he threw a very large stone at a cat near the emergency entrance. The stone almost hit a passerby, leading to a heated argument with him. He kept saying women are useless and refused to talk to any woman, mocking anyone who tried. He also insulted others, calling them the lowest in society.”

The cat's owner found the body and immediately reported the crime to the police.[2] On August 17, the owner received a formal "Notice of Case Filing" (立案告知书) from the authorities.[2]

On August 21, an "Administrative Punishment Decision" (行政处罚决定书) was issued.[2] Wang was sentenced to 7 days of administrative detention for violating Article 49 of the Public Security Administration Punishment Law (intentional destruction of property).[2]

Public reaction and discussion

The incident and the perceived leniency of the 7-day sentence prompted significant public outrage online.[2] Activists and news outlets used the case to highlight the need for more comprehensive animal protection laws in China, arguing that charges like "intentional destruction of property" and "creating a disturbance" are insufficient to address the severity of such violent acts.[1][2] The case became another focal point in the ongoing public call for national anti-animal cruelty legislation.[2]
