The Shanghai "基米咋办你咋办" cat abuse case is an animal cruelty incident that gained widespread attention on Chinese social media in late August, 2025.[1][2] The case involves an individual with an IP address in Shanghai's Yangpu District, using the Douyin alias 基米咋办你咋办 (ID:89731062092), who posted graphic videos of themself torturing cats.[1][2] The case is particularly notable for the perpetrator's explicit use of the abuse to psychologically torment and issue death threats to netizens who confronted the user, and for their public announcements of escalating their attacks in retaliation.[1][2]
Online activity and animal cruelty

The user 基米咋办你咋办 posted videos on their Douyin account depicting extreme acts of violence against cats.[1][2]

The documented methods of torture included kicking, hitting, drowning, breaking the cats' limbs, and prolonged, execution-style binding.[1][2] In the comments section of one of their posts, the user also announced their intention to buy a wrench to grind down or pull out the cats' teeth.[2]
Harassment and threats against netizens

A key feature of the case is the perpetrator's direct engagement with and harassment of other users. When confronted by netizens who advised the user to stop, the user would send insults, threats, and intimidation via private message.[1][2]

The user reportedly issued specific death threats to some individuals, stating, "You just wait, wait to collect a corpse and that'll be it" (你等着收尸就完事了), and "These two cats must die because of you, I'll write your name next to them for you to see" (这俩猫最后必须因为你死,把你名字写它俩旁边给你看).[2]
Escalation and public provocation
The perpetrator was described as completely unrepentant.[1] Although the user deleted some of their historical posts in an attempt to hide evidence, he continued to post new content, including videos showing a cat with permanent injuries.[1]
On the morning of August 28, 2025, the user posted a new video explicitly stating that, as retaliation against the netizens who were criticizing the user, the user had already targeted their next victim, a stray cat.[1][2]

The comment section of their account was described as a "carnival of deviants" (变态的狂欢地).[1]
Legal analysis and public reaction
The reports circulated by animal welfare activists argued that the perpetrator's actions violated multiple laws.[1] The distribution of graphic, violent videos was cited as a violation of Article 12 of the Chinese Cybersecurity Law.[1] Their harassment and threats against multiple people were argued to constitute "Creating a Disturbance" and "Sending Insulting Information" under Articles 26 and 42 of the Public Security Administration Punishment Law, respectively.[1]
