The 2025 Taylor’s University pet-killing and stabbing case refers to an incident of escalating domestic violence that occurred on July 14, 2025.[1] The case involves a 22-year-old Chinese national and student, You Wei, who is accused of killing his ex-girlfriend’s pets before attacking her at the Taylor’s University Lakeside Campus in Subang Jaya, Malaysia.[2] The victim, Wu Jalin, also a Chinese national, survived after being slashed multiple times in the neck with a knife.[1]

Background and precursor events

The attack was reportedly the culmination of a dispute following the couple's breakup.[3] Sources indicate that You Wei exhibited increasingly controlling and volatile behaviour. Prior to the attack, he had allegedly held the victim captive, preventing her from leaving their residence.[4][5]

Animal cruelty

As a direct precursor to the human-directed violence, You Wei allegedly killed the victim’s pets after the breakup. Evidence circulated on Chinese-language social media forums included videos and chat logs.[1][2] These materials purportedly show You Wei using insecticide or disinfectant to kill at least one cat and a hamster belonging to Wu Jalin.[1][2] A video allegedly shows him dousing a cat’s face with pesticide until it lay motionless, with a witness stating, "He sprayed the cat with bug spray. I think it really died."[1] The victim’s mother also allegedly posted a screenshot claiming he “killed her kitten” as a form of intimidation.[2]

Attack at Taylor's University

You Wei restrained at the scene.

On July 14, 2025, Wu Jalin reportedly managed to slip away from her confinement to attend a class on campus.[4] You Wei subsequently followed her to Taylor’s University, entered the campus, and attacked her with a knife, slashing her neck multiple times in front of horrified onlookers.[6][7]

Bystanders, including other students, quickly intervened and subdued You Wei, restraining him until police arrived at the scene.[4][8] The victim sustained a serious but non-fatal neck injury and was transported to a hospital, where she was reported to be in stable condition.[1][2]

You Wei was arrested at the scene and subsequently remanded for four days to assist in the investigation.[6][3] On July 22, 2025, he was formally charged in the Petaling Jaya Magistrate's Court under Section 326 of the Malaysian Penal Code for voluntarily causing grievous hurt with a dangerous weapon.[1][9] The charge carries a penalty of up to 20 years’ imprisonment and is subject to flogging or a fine.[1] You Wei pleaded not guilty, and the court set bail at RM20,000 with two local sureties, also ordering him to surrender his passport and report to a police station monthly.[1]
