On September 14, 2025, a video was posted on the social media platform Douyin showing three unleashed Greyhounds attacking and killing a cat in Nanjing's Gulou District.[1] The owner, who was walking the dogs from his electric scooter, was accused by witnesses of watching and encouraging the attack. The incident sparked significant public outrage and numerous reports to the Nanjing police.
The incident

Around midnight on September 14, 2025, on Siping Road in Nanjing, a witness filmed three large Greyhounds—two black and one white with yellow spots—viciously mauling a cat.[1] The dogs' owner was present, riding an electric scooter, but none of the dogs were on a leash.[1] The witness who filmed the event, using the Douyin account "闪电乌龙球(优荟码头北祖师庵店)" (ID: 582179644), stated that she was too afraid to intervene due to the size of the dogs.[1]

Several young men who were passing by in a car stopped and confronted the owner, who then reportedly denied that the dogs were his.[1] After the confrontation, the owner eventually stopped the attack.[1] He then disposed of the cat's body in a garbage truck and left with the dogs.[1] The witness stated that the owner intimidated her and prevented her from filming the aftermath, and that his dogs circled her electric scooter, causing her to fear for her safety.[1]
Owner's alleged actions and statements
According to the original poster, the owner seemed to be happy and enjoying the spectacle of the attack.[1] This claim was supported by a comment on the Douyin video from another user who analyzed the footage, alleging that as the owner tossed the mauled cat to the side of the road, he could be heard saying, "You guys eat slowly" (你们慢慢吃).[1]

Another commenter pointed out that the owner appeared to intentionally re-engage the dogs in the attack. They noted that after one of the dogs had lost interest and released the cat, the owner dragged the cat's body, causing it to move. This movement allegedly recaptured the attention of the other dogs, which then resumed the attack.[1]
Public response and aftermath

The video quickly gained traction, receiving thousands of comments, with many users reporting the incident to Nanjing police via social media, hotlines, and other channels.[1] Commenters identified the location of the attack as being near the Xiaojie Market (晓街菜场) and suggested the owner might live in the nearby Jinda Garden residential complex (金达花园).[1] Another user sadly commented that they recognized the cat and had seen it in the area a year prior.[1]

Police were reportedly made aware of the incident and were expected to handle the matter.[1] However, by the afternoon of September 14, the original video and a follow-up explanation post by the witness were both set to private on Douyin and were no longer publicly accessible.[1]
