The Zheng Wei Jian cat abuse case is an animal cruelty incident that gained widespread attention on Chinese internet platforms around August 14, 2025.[1][2] The case involves a man from Putian, Fujian named Zheng Wei Jian (郑伟健), who is accused of using online platforms to fraudulently adopt at least nine cats, primarily young kittens, which he then tortured to death.[1][2] The incidents were particularly notable because Zheng allegedly filmed the extreme abuse and distributed the graphic videos in a QQ group.[1] The case sparked public outrage and a formal online complaint after activists and victims alleged that local police had initially refused to accept their reports.[1]

Modus operandi

Zheng at the moment of adopting kittens

Zheng Wei Jian allegedly posed as a kind-hearted adopter on online platforms, primarily Xianyu and WeChat, to deceive rescuers into giving him cats.[1][2] He was reportedly so effective in his deception that he boasted, "They absolutely think I'm a good person!"[2] After successfully obtaining the cats, he would violate the adoption agreements by torturing and killing them.[1] His mother was also allegedly aware of the situation and, when confronted, blamed the rescuers, stating, "It's all your fault for giving him the cat, that's why he abused and killed it!"[1][2]

Allegations of animal cruelty

The abuse described was extreme and sadistic. One Jianzhou cat was reportedly tortured for eight days; it was beaten to near-death and revived three or four times, had its bones broken, was skinned alive, and was finally stabbed until its internal organs were exposed while its heart was still beating.[1][2] Other alleged methods of torture included scalding cats to death with boiling water, twisting off their limbs, and beating them with a slingshot until they vomited blood.[1][2] At least nine cats were victims of these acts.[1][2] Zheng's stated motive was not merely to kill the animals, but to derive pleasure from their suffering; he was quoted as saying, "If abusing cats is just to kill them, then it's really not interesting," and that he did it to "hear it scream."[2]

Online activity and distribution of content

Zheng Wei Jian used a number of online accounts to perpetrate the adoptions and distribute the abusive content.[1][2]

Police response and public demands

Weixin group chat exposing Zheng and demanding police action

According to the complaint circulated by activists on August 14, when victims and other concerned netizens reported the case to the police, their reports were not accepted.[1] In response, a formal public complaint was written and shared online, calling for the Putian police to take action against Zheng.[1] The complaint argued that his actions violated multiple laws, including Article 275 of the Chinese Criminal Law (Intentional Destruction of Property) and Articles 23 & 26 of the Public Security Administration Punishment Law (Disturbing Public Order and Creating a Disturbance).[1]

The demands included that police issue the maximum penalty, that local authorities place Zheng under long-term monitoring due to his antisocial personality, and that his online accounts and the QQ group used to spread the videos be permanently banned.[1]

One Weibo post

On August 15, 彩色地球守护人 published a detailed post on Weibo, containing additional information about the case. The text of the post is provided below:
