Overview

The case concerns allegations that a Suzhou-based pet influencer, Li Xiang (李祥), known online as 橘桑 (Jusang), systematically tortured and killed small dogs he obtained through online adoption channels.[3][4] He allegedly monetized this abuse through a paid QQ group named 爱迪生, where he live-streamed and sold videos of extreme cruelty for profit.[3] The reported acts included burning dogs alive, dragging them with a scooter, puncturing them with needles, applying salt to wounds,[3] and sealing one dog's anus with glue.[2] While committing these acts, Li Xiang maintained a public persona as a dedicated cat rescuer with over 450,000 followers on Douyin.[2][4]

In the QQ group 爱迪生, Li Xiang shared videos of him dragging the abused dog while riding an electric scooter.

Netizens exposed Li after connecting his personal information from cat food donations to the details of the abuser.[4][7] Suspicions about his treatment of animals had reportedly existed among some online users prior to the main incident's exposure.[1][4] Following an investigation by Suzhou police, a government hotline confirmed that Li had been administratively detained at the end of March 2024.[1] Shortly after his release, he began a denial campaign, creating new social media accounts to claim he was framed.[4][5] His cat, 眼仔, was rescued and placed in foster care by police and local animal protection volunteers.[4][6]

The incident

According to information shared by 伴侣动物专项基金, a QQ group called 爱迪生 was created on March 14, 2024, for members to pay to watch animal abuse.[3] The group organizer, identified as Li Xiang with the QQ nickname 大善人, would charge members at least RMB 500 per session to watch him torture and kill dogs he acquired through adoption platforms like Xianyu and Douyin.[3]

The reported timeline of abuse within two weeks included:[3]

  • March 22: A brown toy poodle was burned to death outdoors.[3]
  • March 23: Another brown toy poodle was killed indoors using red-hot scissors.[3]
  • March 24: A white bichon frisé was burned and then buried alive.[3]
  • March 30: A black toy poodle was bound, punctured with a steel needle, dragged by an electric scooter until its paws bled, and had salt poured on its wounds.[3]

Posts included screenshots from the QQ group showing Li discussing payment and methods,[3] as well as a post from 握爪APP official Weibo comparing the electric scooter in the abuse videos to one seen in Li's own social media content.[8] Additionally, sources reported that to increase the dogs' suffering, Li sealed one victim's anus with glue.[2]

Identification and prior suspicions

In late March, 2024, netizens and animal welfare groups began to connect the abuser "Li mou" (李某) to the pet influencer 橘桑.[4][7] A key breakthrough came when a user who had donated cat food to 橘桑 realized the name, address, and phone number matched the personal details of the suspect being circulated online.[4][7] Further comparisons made by netizens between the influencer's videos and the abuse footage found matches in voice, physical build, hands, feet, and the electric scooter.[7]

Even before the March 2024 incidents, some users had expressed suspicion. Comments on social media indicated that as early as the previous year, there were allegations of him killing dogs and using mydriatic drugs on cats.[1] Another comment from January 2024 on one of his posts claimed to have seen his work on "爱猫tv," a known slang for platforms showing cat abuse content.[4]

A comment under Li’s social media post noted his "works" on animal torture platforms.

Allegations regarding the cat "Yanzai" (眼仔)

The cat Yanzai’s dilated pupils were a recurring feature in Li’s social media posts.

Multiple posts alleged that Li used mydriatic eye drops, such as atropine (阿托品), on his cat 眼仔 to make its pupils appear persistently large and "cute" for videos.[2][9] Commentators expressed concern about the potential harm and side effects of such drugs.[2] These claims were presented as allegations by netizens and bloggers, not confirmed medical findings. Following Li's detention, multiple sources confirmed that 眼仔 was safely removed from the residence by police, community staff, and Li's father,[4][6] and was temporarily placed in a foster home.[4]

Law enforcement response and denial campaign

Li was given administrative detention, according to official sources.

A screenshot of a Suzhou 12345 government service hotline SMS dated March 31, 2024, stated that public security authorities had investigated the dog abuse and that "the violator has been detained according to law".[1] This was later described as an administrative detention.[6]

Li claimed to be innocent after his release from detention.

Days after his release,[5] Li Xiang began a campaign to deny the allegations. On April 9, he posted on his WeChat Moments, claiming the chat logs were fake and that he was framed by volunteers; he later deleted this post.[5][4] Concurrently, he created a new Douyin account with the nickname 大眼仔 and ID 66656121045, where he posted videos claiming his innocence.[4]

Subsequent developments

  • Account Changes: Before his detention, Li operated the Douyin account 橘桑 (ID: jusang2022)[2] and Xiaohongshu account 橘桑 (ID: L95202000).[4] After his detention in early April 2024, he created the Douyin account 大眼仔 (ID: 66656121045) to "whitewash" the narrative.[4] By September 2025, he was reportedly active on a new Xiaohongshu account, 眼眼子和小丫头 (ID: 42159345540), continuing to present himself as a rescuer of stray cats.[1]
  • Cat Rescue Status: Multiple sources confirmed that the cat 眼仔 was removed from Li's control and was safe in temporary foster care.[4][6] Volunteers who checked Li's basement, which was featured in his videos, found no cats, suggesting his previous rescue imagery may have been staged.[7][6]
  • Community Response: Bloggers and advocacy groups called for the dogs' original owners to report the fraud and theft to the police to enable stronger charges.[7] They also highlighted the case as an example of why China needs comprehensive animal protection legislation, as current laws often force authorities to rely on ancillary offenses like 寻衅滋事 (creating a disturbance).[7]
